Halfway through the year, 2020 has gifted readers with some amazing novels from Black writers. The story though, for me, wasn’t my thing. He doesn’t stick the landing at points, and it does run on in spots. It's also a book where very little happens--there's a lot of looking back--and that doesn't help things. Truly, this is stunning work from a writer who wields his craft in absolutely unforgettable ways.Though it pains me to write it, this book and I just did not fit well together much at all. After finishing the book, I felt like my world was rocked, I had to sit with that feeling for a moment. I feel like I’ve been reading Brandon Taylor’s work forever, and remember clearly the day on Twitter when he got into Iowa. This is perhaps why people get together in the first place. Wallace is a much better person than I am though because he sees people’s humanity. I’m glad I let peer pressure push me past my stereotypes on this one. This has been one of my top reads this year and I was so thrilled to see it on the Booker longlist. As Wallace’s carefully constructed barriers begin to crumble, he spirals into hyper-intellectual ruminations on topics such as grief, privilege, racism, trauma, queer sexuality, violence, academia and the messy ways in which they all mix. These heavy, uncomfortable topics make for a heavy, uncomfortable reading experience, one that shares more than a few similarities with Hanya Yanagihara’s juggernaut, As Wallace reflects on a rather disastrous dinner party, “This is why he keeps the truth to himself, because other people don’t know what to do with your shit, with the reality of other people’s feelings. The character Wallace questions the white apology, how much we have to bring in from our past, and how sure we have to be of our life direction. It's also a book where very little happens--there's a lot of looking back--and that doI got an early copy of this from my bookseller, who couldn't make up her mind about it. I appreciate some of what it portrays, the struggles of Wallace, a gay black biochemistry graduate student living in the Midwest. © 1996-2020 BookPage and ProMotion, inc. | 2143 Belcourt Avenue, Nashville, TN 37212 (but, it doesn't say the species of bird) There is writing so exceptional, so intricately crafted that it demands reverence. Wallace can't make up his mind about anything, and it feels like the author is wringing him dry for the sake of the story, rather than that pain coming from the character. She spent most of her child’s lesson on her phone and/or sipping her Starbucks coffee. Let us know what’s wrong with this preview of I felt so much rage, such deep seated rage against the people that antagonized Wallace and I wanted to seriously conjure magic to go into the book to beat everyone up. He is closed unto himself but wanting to open There is writing so exceptional, so intricately crafted that it demands reverence. Yet, I know that what Wallace experienced is a reality for so many and he’s not telling his story waiting on you to save him. My favorite parts of Real Life were when Wallace is alone and he shares his thoughts with the reader. Real Life by Brandon Taylor has an overall rating of Positive based on 18 book reviews. Dispensing with Midwestern niceties and Southern platitudes, Brandon Taylor announces his arrival to readers with Impressive in its economy, the novel spans the course of a single weekend in the life of Wallace, a black graduate student who has moved from Alabama to a Midwestern university town. Taylor does an excellent job of showcasinFINAL REVIEW: Real Life follows Wallace, a young Black and queer Biochemistry student enrolled in a predominantly white school and living in a predominantly white town. The author uses some of his own experiences as a gay science grad student who is also a person of color. He captures the feelings of being human and insecure. In Real Life we meet Wallace, originally from Alabama, he moved to the Midwest to pursue a degree in biochem.
